Studio or Home for Your Newborn Session?

Some parents are dying to get out of the house. Others would rather do almost anything than pack a diaper bag and leave.

Both are reasonable.

The question is which sounds better to you.

COMING TO THE STUDIO

My studio is in Steveston Village in Richmond. It’s big, bright and full of soft window light.

You don’t need to bring half the nursery. I have wraps, outfits and everything we’ve planned to use.

Bring anything special you want included. Otherwise, bring the baby.

Afterwards, you’re already in Steveston. Grab coffee, have lunch, wander around or take dinner home.

Look at you. Out of the house with a newborn.

There are stairs to the studio. I’m happy to help carry things, and I have another option if stairs aren’t possible for you.

STAYING HOME

The obvious advantage?

You don’t have to go anywhere.

Your bed is there. Your snacks are there. Your toddler’s toys are there.

Pets can wander in. Older kids can wander out.

And your home becomes part of the photographs.

Your house does not need to be spotless.

I’m coming with a camera, not a white glove.

BUT MY HOUSE IS DARK

I bring lighting.

No flash firing around the room. I use soft natural and continuous light to keep the bright, clean look you see in my work.

I don’t need a huge house either. A bed near a window and some floor space can be plenty.

If your home is very dark or space is tight, tell me beforehand. We’ll figure out if it will work.

I do need parking nearby because I bring a small car’s worth of equipment.

In-home sessions are available in Richmond, Ladner and South Vancouver.

WHAT IF MY BABY HAS OTHER PLANS?

They probably will.

We stop for feeds.

We stop for diaper changes.

If they’re awake, we photograph them awake.

If they need to be held, we work with that.

If your baby hates a hat, the hat has lost.

I reserve plenty of time so nobody needs to rush. Sometimes we’re finished in an hour. Sometimes baby has other ideas.

Baby wins.

WHAT ABOUT SIBLINGS?

Both studio and home work.

The studio has room to move without much distraction.

At home, siblings have their own toys and somewhere to disappear after their three minutes of cooperation.

Studio is cleaner and simpler.

Home includes more of your everyday life.

Different. Not better.

DO I HAVE TO BE IN THE PHOTOS?

No.

I’m not wrestling a sleep-deprived parent into a photograph.

I will probably encourage you to take a few, though.

You can’t come back later and photograph yourself holding this version of your baby.

So take the photo.

SO WHICH ONE?

Want bright, simple photographs and everything ready when you arrive?

Studio.

Want to stay home with your bed, pets, snacks and sibling entertainment?

Home.

That’s fine. We’ll figure it out.

AFTER THE SESSION

About one to two weeks later, we’ll look through your finished photographs together.

I do the designing and take care of the details.

No gallery homework.

No designing an album at 11 pm.

No digital files quietly ageing on your computer.
